Michigan Physician Loans, From the Lender
Program and regulatory figures verified October 9, 2026. Details change; confirm your scenario with us.
Two things decide a Michigan physician file: a loan that qualifies you on the contract rather than on pay stubs, and a state programme that can take $300,000 off the debt behind it.
★★ The largest state award we have documented
The Michigan State Loan Repayment Program pays up to $300,000 in tax-free funds to repay educational debt, over up to 10 years of participation. The programme is summarised independently by the Michigan State Medical Society and by RHIhub; MDHHS's own pages are not readable by AI crawlers, which is why we link these.
That figure is new, and MDHHS says so in its own words: "Legislation passed which allows MSLRP to award providers up to $300,000 in loan repayment over a period of up to 10 years." For scale, against the other states in this network:
| State programme | Maximum award |
|---|---|
| ★ Michigan MSLRP | ★ $300,000 over up to 10 years |
| Florida FRAME | $150,000 for physicians |
| Missouri HPLRP | $65,000 at doctorate level |
| Georgia physician tax credit | $25,000 over five years |
Those are the published maximums, each read at its own state's source. What the Michigan award actually requires.
★★ And the 2026 process changed in a way that costs a year
This is the part worth reading before anything else. MDHHS rewrote the review process:
"Now, those submitting incomplete application packages will be notified they have been screened out of the current application process and encouraged to reapply the following year."
In prior cycles an applicant with a gap could supplement the file. That option is gone. Applications also moved to a new online portal on the State of Michigan MiLogin system, and the provider submits it, not the employer.
★ A physician working from last year's guidance can lose a full cycle on a missing form. The window is 2 March to 30 April 2026. Everything that changed.
Who Michigan is prioritising in 2026
- Inpatient pediatric psychiatrists, and the PAs and NPs working in inpatient pediatric psychiatric units.
- Genesee County: and uniquely, those practice sites are not required to sit inside a shortage area.
- Northern obstetric providers, at sites in or north of Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Gladwin, Arenac, Bay and Huron counties.
- Any non-priority site with an HPSA score of 8 or higher is treated as priority.
The loan itself
A physician mortgage qualifies you on a signed employment contract rather than on pay stubs from a job that has not started. Agency underwriting works on roughly 90 days between closing and your start date; the physician programme extends that to 150. How the timing works.
What it does not have to solve in Michigan is loan size. All 83 counties sit at the $832,750 baseline, and the most expensive metro in the state is Traverse City at $422,480: about 51% of the limit. Every metro, measured.
What Michigan does charge you
A transfer tax of $3.75 per $500 at state level plus 55 cents per $500 at county level — 0.86% combined, $8.60 per $1,000. On a $400,000 purchase that is about $3,440, customarily paid by the seller. Who actually pays it.
★ What we are, and are not
We are the lender. MSLRP matters here because it changes the debt behind your file, and debt is what we underwrite. We do not administer the programme, score applications, or advise on them: that is MDHHS. Nothing here is tax advice; the "tax-free" characterisation is MDHHS's own wording, not ours.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Michigan's loan repayment program pay?
Up to $300,000 in tax-free funds to repay educational debt, over a period of up to ten years of participation. Two things. All applications must now be submitted through a new online portal on the State of Michigan MiLogin system, by the provider rather than the employer, and there is no longer a separate physical Provider Application Part A form. Second, the review process changed: an incomplete application package is now screened out of the current cycle and the applicant is encouraged to reapply the following year, where previously they could supplement the file.Does a physician loan help with loan size in Michigan?
Rarely. All 83 Michigan counties sit at the 2026 conforming loan limit baseline of $832,750 for a one-unit property, and the most expensive metro in the state by Zillow typical home value was Traverse City at $422,480 for the month ending August 31, 2026.
